40 Years of KCTKumaraguru Celebrates 40th Batch of KCT during KCT Swagatham 2023 

On the landmark 40th year since its inception, Kumaraguru College of Technology (KCT) recorded the highest enrolment of students this year. Over 1400 students joined various undergraduate programmes at KCT as the 40th batch. A month-long celebration for KCT40 will witness series of events and initiatives which began with KCT Swagatham 2023 on 04 September 2023. Through Swagatham, the freshers are formally inducted into the Kumaraguru ecosystem in the presence of their parents.

“Feel very special that you are part of the 40th batch of the institution,” said Shri Shankar Vanavarayar, Joint Correspondent, Kumaraguru Institutions. Offering felicitations to freshers and parents, he said the Founder of Kumaraguru Institutions, Arutchelvar Dr N Mahalingam believed that an institution like KCT will ensure that it empowers thousands of young people. After 40 years, his vision has become true. Here we are in the 40th year with highest admissions in the last 40 years. 

Asking students to work towards making India a world leader, Shri Shankar Vanavarayar said the Kumaraguru looks at the students as partners and not mere receivers of ideas from the institution. KCT Swagatham 2023 was presided over by Shri M Balasubramaniam, Correspondent, Kumaraguru Institutions. 

Union Minister Piyush Goyal visits, Kumaraguru Stall at 11th Asian Textile Conference  

Hon’ble Union Minister for Textile, Commerce, and Industry Piyush Goyal visited the stall of the Department of Textile Technology, Kumaraguru College of Technology (KCT) at the 11th Asian Textile Conference (ATEXCON) held at Radisson Blu, Coimbatore on 01 September 2023. He was accompanied by Hon’ble Minister of State for Textiles and Railways Smt. Darshana Jardosh.

KCT Principal Dr. D Saravanan briefed the Hon’ble Minister about the activities of the Textile and Fashion Departments of KCT. The Minister appreciated the efforts of the institutions during the brief interaction. 

The 11th Asian Textile Conference was jointly organized by Confederation of Indian Textile Industry (CITI) and Southern India Mill’s Association (SIMA) at Radisson Blu, Coimbatore. The theme for this year’s ATEXCON was “2025 and beyond – Asia, the global hub for textile manufacturing & consumers”. 

ATEXCON brought together the leading players of Asian textile industry, global input suppliers and service providers to deliberate on key areas of business, including regional as well as global issues concerning this sector. The Conference also focused on the emerging business opportunities through cross country co operation. 

Union Ministry of Textiles sanctions Rs 2.5 Crore Funds to KCT’s Textile Technology Department 

Kumaraguru College of Technology (KCT) bags funding of Rs 2.5 Crore under the National Technical Textile Mission (NTTM) announced by the Union Ministry of Textile on 28 August 2023. The Department of Textile Technology of KCT can set up laboratory equipment in technical textile utilizing the fund. The amount of Rs 20 Lakhs within this grant is earmarked for the purpose of training teaching faculty on technical textiles. 

With a view to position India as the Global Leader in Technical Textiles, Ministry of Textiles launched the National Technical Textiles Mission (NTTM) in March 2020. The Mission aims to drive four key components under Technical Textiles – Research, Innovation and Development; Promotion and Market Development; Education, Skilling, and Training; and Export Promotion. 

NTTM provides grants for Enabling of Academic Institutes in Technical Textiles’ Education to contribute to improving the learning levels of public and private institutes through various appropriate interventions. The Department of Textile Technology, KCT, is planning to set up a center of excellence (CoE) in technical textiles with special focus on Protective Textiles. 

Startup idea of Anti-diabetic food products from KCT student Recognized at SmartIDEAthon-2023 

The startup idea of a Biotechnology student, Ms. Yoga from KCT offering anti-diabetic food products as a healthy solution for sweet craving won ‘Dr. Leben Johnson People’s Choice Award’ at the SmartIDEAthon-2023, organized by GITAM Deemed University, Hyderabad on 25 August 2023. She made a winning pitch at the national level event for their start-up MediCandy for which she received the award which comes with a cash prize of Rs 50,000. 

Ms. Yoga V I, a third-year student from the Department of Biotechnology from Kumaraguru College of Technology has won the award along with a student from Bannari Amman Institute of Technology who jointly presented their idea in the SmartIDEAthon-2023 organized in collaboration with Startup India, Invest India, Northeastern University Center for Emerging Markets and Northeastern University Center for Entrepreneurship Education (NUCEE), Boston. 

Ms. Yoga, along with her teammate presented the idea of developing convenient antidiabetic food products like gummies, candies and cookies under the theme food and health. The idea was among the top 8 finalists out of over 1000 applications. 

KCT students gets IEEE APS Scholarship by Tsinghua University, Beijing  

V Aparna, a final year student from the Department of ECE from Kumaraguru College of Technology Coimbatore has bagged the Undergraduate Summer Research Scholarship (USRS) of IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society (AP-S) by Tsinghua University, Beijing, China. 

She will receive a scholarship of $3,000 USD for her research Project “Design of a Compact High Gain Millimeter Wave Antenna for the Future Sixth Generation (6G) Communication”. Aparna is one among the 34 students globally who will get the scholarship for their research project.  

Aparna was guided by Professors from her department K Karthika and S Arun Kumar who encouraged her to do her research on 6G Communication Technology. She is looking forward to working on her research project which needs to be submitted at the end of this year. She has also been invited to submit a paper to the 2024 IEEE AP-S/International Union of Radio Science (URSI) Symposium to be held in July next year.  

Kumaraguru Students offered Valuable Insights on Making it to Global Universities  

More than 100 students from Kumaraguru College of Technology (KCT) and Kumaraguru College of Liberal Arts and Science (KCLAS) attend sessions on hassle free ways of joining global universities for higher education on 01 Sept 2023. 

The Global Vice President of upGrad Connect, Ms. Kala Anand, gave an overview on strategies to achieve the goals of an international education leading to a successful career in a session organised by the Office of International Relations, Kumaraguru Institutions. She touched up on the details on eligibility, fee structure, scholarships available, and the selection criteria for the universities in the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, Switzerland, France, Middle East, Singapore, Australia, and New Zealand!   

This session covered the process of pursuing an international education and students as Kumaraguru students will now have access to the upGradConnect edtech online platform and be able to use the services to support their goals and aspirations. Kumaraguru had in July this year signed an MoU with UpGrad Connect, South Asia’s largest higher education services organisation to facilitate Kumaraguru students aspiring to join global universities for higher studies get admitted into institutions of their choice.  

KCT Biotechnology Student Gets Best Innovator Award 

Kumaraguru Biotechnology student awarded Best Innovator in the International Conference on Applications of Natural Products Nanomaterials and Nano-pharmaceuticals (ICAN3) organized by School of Life Sciences, BS Abdur Rahman Crescent Institute of Science and Technology in Chennai on 9-10 August 2023. 

C Logesh, a third-year student from the Department of Biotechnology received the award for offering plant – based alternative to Foetal blood which is used for animal cell culture. Considered one of the dark sides of the biotechnology research, Foetal bovine serum (FBS) is a common component of animal cell culture harvested from bovine foetuses taken from pregnant cows during slaughter. FBS is commonly harvested by means of a cardiac puncture without any form of anaesthesia. This practice being inhumane, Logesh tried to offer plant-based alternative to foetal blood. The poster offered solution to an existing problem statement impacting society which gave him an edge over other competitors following which he was awarded best Innovator. 

Freshers Underwent Four Day Ignite Boot Camp 

After a warm Swagatham to Kumaraguru College of Technology (KCT), the first-year students underwent four day long Ignite Boot Camp designed to guide the freshers into the world of opportunities, help them understand their self, explore possibilities, and transform their lives in the campus.

Ignite’s vision is to make the Freshers comfortable with KCT Campus life and get committed in pursuing the engineering programme to excel in their field of interest. Ignite being fully managed by senior students of the institution, it served as a platform for the freshers to interact with their seniors.

Students were informed about the academic, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities of the institutions. – Ignite was an opportunity for the students to know their personal interests, understand KCT environment to explore, innovate, invent and to learn and connect themselves with the opportunities provided. It enabled them to accept the change and be an active part of the various activities within the campus. Ignite also helped the students to get acclimatised with KCT campus life, engage in group activities, follow healthy lifestyle and professional discipline.

Teachers Day celebrated at Kumaraguru Campus  

As Band Agratha – the student led musical band of Kumaraguru set the tone for Teachers Day Celebrations at the Auditorium on 05 September 2023 with their mesmerising musical performance, it was followed by Team Evoke that came up with some breathtaking dance performances.

Team Haasya and Drama Troupe performed a play highlighting the role of teachers in moulding the future generation. As teachers of Kumaraguru Institutions were gathered at the Ramananda Adigalar Auditorium, Mr Srinivas Sastri, Chief Human Resource Officer of Kumaraguru Institutions wished the teachers and recalled teacher personalities who left indelible impact on his life. Shri Shankar Vanavarayar, Joint Correspondent, Kumaraguru Institutions remembered the invaluable contribution of teachers in shaping Kumaraguru Institutions which has now entered the 40th year of its inception.

The formal event concluded with the screening of an audio-visual narrating the landmark moments and achievements of the institution over the last 40 years. At the end, the logo for the 40th year celebration was unveiled which kicked off a month-long celebration in the campus.

New Synthetic Kabaddi Court inaugurated at Kumaraguru Institutions 

Adding up to the existing sports infrastructure at Kumaraguru Institutions, two synthetic mat surface Kabaddi courts were inaugurated in the campus on 08 September 2023. The two courts with flood lights are in addition to the two existing clay courts in the campus. The new facility has enabled the institution to conduct national level Kabaddi tournaments in the institution. The addition of flood lights will help in conducting day-night matches.

Kabaddi has transformed in the recent years and off late the game is played mostly on synthetic mat surface. The new facility will help train more players from the institution and prepare them for state and national level tournaments.  

On the inaugural day, a Kabaddi tournament was organised in the new facility and players from three colleges in Coimbatore played matches with the Kumaraguru teams. In the men’s category, CMS College of Arts and Commerce secured the first place, followed by Hindustan Engineering College which secured the second place. KCT team secured third spot. In the women’s category, the team of Kumaraguru Institutions won against KPR Institutions.
