Inauguration of The Orb
A 115 feet tall flag mast surrounded by an expansive open pavilion with a seating capacity of over 800 people was inaugurated in the Kumaraguru Campus on 02 September 2022. The facility named as ‘The Orb’ accommodates the tallest flag mast of the region which will have the tricolour flying round the clock with substantial illumination. Nobel Peace Laureate Kailash Sathyarthi inaugurated the pavilion and addressed the gathering. Subedar Major and Honorary Captain Yogendra Singh Yadav who was the youngest awardee of the Param Vir Chakra hoisted the national flag and addressed the gathering. This is the first time that both the chief guests are visiting Coimbatore. Positioned close to the sports ground on the campus in the middle of a circular podium, the flag mast is integrated with an open pavilion. It will play host to diverse events and activities for students making it an ideal space for them to discover adventure and practice. Kumaraguru Institutions, with a vision to create a space that celebrates freedom, inclusivity and evolution, dedicated the Orb to the nation in the momentous year when the nation is celebrating the 75 years of our independence.
In the landmark centenary year of the Founder, Arutchelvar Dr.N.Mahalingam Ayya, the Orb was commissioned with an aspiration of becoming an orbit where thousands of young minds, hearts and lives are inspired to make India among the greatest in the next few decades. This contemporary space will be used by NCC cadets for their drill practice. The open pavilion will have the screening of movies, cultural performances and sports activities besides hosting art and design expos. In the evening session, the Nobel Laureate for Peace Kailash Satyarthi recalled how a journalist once asked him about many challenges faced by India citing the vast population as one of the reasons. He responded by saying that it is also the land of billion solutions by referring to its vast population as an opportunity rather than a liability. He stressed that the younger generation is full of energy and can find solutions to prevailing problems. However, he pointed out that there is a need to preserve and nurture the youth. Kailash has worked for child rights across 150 countries, he said he felt ashamed to find many countries giving priority to weapons than ensuring books and toys to children. Saying that he dreams of a world without boundaries and borders, he said the world is not just interconnected, it is interdependent. He drew a comparison on how Covid on one side had made children more vulnerable to child labour as it hit the families in the lower strata but on the other side it was also instrumental in adding up to billionaires across the world. He asked the elders to keep the child inside them alive as childhood is not about age but all about truthfulness and honesty.
