Echoing India’s voice in the global arena for a sustainable clean energy source to mitigate climate change, an ambitious and unconventional line-up of 14 engineering students called Team Sea Sakthi from Kumaraguru College of Technology, Coimbatore, has positioned the nation on the path of e-mobility in the marine engineering category. Monaco, the capital of advanced yachting has been hosting the annual Monaco Energy Boat Challenge (MEBC) since 2004 and Team Sea Sakthi, the first ever Indian team to be qualified for the Challenge went on steadfast to position India in the sixth place in the overall ranking and won the 2000 Euros worth Communication Prize in the debut entry. The 9th Monaco Energy Boat Challenge powered by Yacht Club de Monaco was held between 04 and 09 July 2022. There were 38 teams from 27 universities across 21 countries participating in the competition under three categories namely Solar Class, Energy Class and Open Sea Class. Team Sea Sakthi, comprising 14 undergraduate engineering students from mechanical, electronics and computer clusters with a lot of passion, grit and determination went on to build a Zero Emission Energy Boat called Yali, named after the mythical creature synonymous with valor and strength.

Yali weighing 310 kg champions alternate propulsion systems using clean sources of energy runs on a lithium-ion battery and a solar panel. Following the challenging technical inspection; the evacuation test which requires the pilot to evacuate the boat in less than five seconds and swim away from the boat and the self-draining test to ensure that water drains out from the cockpit, Team Sea Sakthi, in their maiden effort became the second team to be officially qualified to participate in the Boat Challenge among the 16 other teams competing in the Energy Class Race on the 6th of July.

On the 07th of July, His Excellency Jawed Ashraf, Ambassador of India for France and Monaco visited and congratulated the team for representing India for the first time at MEBC. Later in the day, the team presented the technical features of the boat in terms of design, propulsion, endurance and manoeuvrability at the TedTalk. On the 8th of July, the Indian team started off well by positioning in 3rd place initially at the Endurance Race and later following the Slalom Race and Championship Race on 9th July, Team Sea Sakthi won the 6th position in the overall ranking in addition to winning the Communication Prize worth 2000 Euros for being the most supported team among the 38 participating teams.
