Inauguration of N. Mahalingam Centre for Public Policy (NM CPP)  

N. Mahalingam Centre for Public Policy (NM CPP) was inaugurated at Kumaraguru Campus on 02 May 2022 as a part of the centenary celebrations of Founder Chairman Arutchelvar Dr.N.Mahalingam. The inauguration was presided over by Shri Shankar Vanavarayar, Joint Correspondent of Kumaraguru Institutions in the presence of the Chief Guest Shri. Nitin Pai, Co-Founder and Director of Takshashila Institution, Bangalore. NM CPP shall function as an independent public policy think tank associated with Kumaraguru College of Liberal Arts and Science to advance public policy goals through developmental research, education and advocacy by engaging with government and policy influencers for the well-being of people.  

Launch of Yali

A team of 14 students from the Kumaraguru College of Technology (KCT) in the city is all set to sail to Monaco in Europe after emerging as the first-ever Indian team to qualify for the energy boat challenge by the Monaco Yacht Club. Named Sea Sakthi, the team would represent the country in the challenge that would commence on July 4 and go on till 9. The challenge is to develop alternative propulsion systems by using clean energy sources. The team is currently busy burning their midnight oil to build a futuristic boat that runs both on battery and solar power. The boat is being built at KCT Garage, a tech forum for automotive and mechanical research in the college. The launch of Yali, India’s first ever student-designed energy boat of Team Sea Sakthi was held at Kumaraguru Campus on 06 May 2022 in the presence of Commodore Ashok Kumar Rai, Commanding Officer, INS Agrani and Dr. D. Saravanan, Kumaraguru College of Technology. Team Sea Sakthi from KCT GARAGE, the only team representing India is participating at the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge 2022 organised by the prestigious Yacht Club De Monaco.

Kumaraguru Applauds the Project Based Learning Framework Students  

Kumaraguru College of Technology, a hub of academic and research innovation endorsed 146 second year B.E. / B.Tech students in an exclusive Kumaraguru PBL Achievers’ Recognition Ceremony on 04 May 2022. The student achievers had earlier enrolled for Project Based Learning Framework and successfully completed 52 projects over a period of 3 semesters under the guidance of 52 mentors. These projects led to the fruition of 35 prototypes and 29 research publications and the student achievers along with their mentors were recognised for their remarkable feat.  The ceremony was presided over by Shri Shankar Vanavarayar, Joint Correspondent, Kumaraguru Institutions who applauded the efforts of the students and encouraged them to be inquisitive and kindle their scientific temper and curiosity to excel in their endeavour. The Chief Guest of the ceremony, Prof. G.K. Suraishkumar from IIT Madras was appreciative of the innovative teaching learning approach adopted in the engineering study and stated that the future looks forward for an inquiry-based learning approach. Following the recognition, PBL learners, mentors and parents shared their reflections, their proactive learning experience and outcomes under PBL Framework. Dr.D.Saravanan, Principal, Kumaraguru College of Technology and Dr.M.Ezhilarasi, Associate Dean and Head, School of Foundational Sciences, too appreciated the efforts of the PBL learners.

It inculcates the habit of supporting, contributing, and giving amongst people, creating social awareness, and promoting zero waste policy. This year, the hunt for the purpose led our students to Ukkadam, where they did plogging, i.e, collecting trash while we jog. Also, they took the responsibility of creating awareness among people about keeping our locality clean. The active involvement of our students made people and children of the local community join the mission. Also, our students took up the job of frontline workers on occasion of Workers Day as a sign of respect and gratitude. The destination towards the quest for opportunities is right before your eyes in the form of Yugam, an extravaganza to showcase and explore your talents.  

Department Events 

PGDDE Batch-8 Launch 

PGDDE (Post Graduate Diploma in Design Engineering for Oil and Gas Industry) Batch-8 Programme was launched virtually on 4 May 2022. Kumaraguru College of Technology (KCT) and Cameron (CMI), a Schlumberger (SLB) company entered into an MoU in 2014 and the First Batch was launched. Since then, 147 students from 7 Batches have passed out from the programme and are successfully working with CMI-SLB as Design Engineers.  The 31 students selected for the Batch-8 Programme attended the virtual launch function. Around 2044 candidates from more than 20 states across India applied for the programme. After a rigorous selection process which included two rounds of technical/aptitude exams, technical and HR interviews, 31 deserving students were selected for the programme. The selection list includes 19 from Mechanical, 6 Chemical, 2 EEE and 4 from Civil Engineering disciplines with a gender ratio of 55% male and 45% female candidates.  Shri Shankar Vanavarayar, President, Kumaraguru Institutions, gave the Presidential Address and wished the students on the occasion. During his address, he emphasized on the strong association between KCT and CMI-SLB and the legacy built over the years through the PGDDE Programme. Mr. Veerabathraswamy, Centre Head, CMI-India, in his Inaugural Address, highlighted the exciting opportunities available for the budding engineers in the Oil and Gas Industry and spoke on the industry’s scope in the next two decades. Ms.Laura Perkins, HR Manager, CMI India welcomed the Batch-8 students in her address. Earlier during the day, Dr.Joseph V Thanikal, Director, SEA-KCT welcomed the gathering, wished the students and spoke about the successful collaboration between KCT and CMI-SLB. Dr.Satish Kumar Sagadevan, Associate Director, Sakthi Excellence Academy (SEA), KCT, made a presentation about the PGDDE Programme which included its features, selection process, facilitator’s profile, curriculum and delivery.  Few of the Batch-8 students shared their experiences in the selection process and their expectations of working with CMI-SLB. Mr.Nagarajan, Program Manager, SEA-KCT proposed the Vote of Thanks. Ms.Titas Bhattacharya, Recruitment, Training & Development Manager, CMI-SLB India, HODs from KCT, faculty from KCT & PGDDE and SEA staff members were present during the function. 

Scholastic Talk Series Session 14 – Better Engaged Learners 

The Project Based Learning Framework of KCT conducted a Special Lecture titled Better Engaged Learners in Swami Vivekananda Seminar Hall on 04 May 2022.  Prof.G.K.Suraishkumar, Professor, Department of Biotechnology, IIT Madras, served to be the Guest Speaker for the event and elaborated on the various techniques of engaging engineering students during offline and online classes.  He insisted on the significance of Flipped Classes, Project Based Learning, Problem Based Learning and Gamification in making the teaching-learning process effective.  He also gave out the importance of formative assessments and the need to check the understanding of the candidates on a regular basis.  He shared his experiences of creating the NPTEL courses on Biotechnology and Problem Based Learning, and also shared a sample syllabus and rubrics for evaluation at various stages of course delivery.  This session gave insights on how to engage the candidates effectively during classroom sessions and on how to assess their performance formatively.  There were 100+ faculty members from KCT and KCLAS present during the session. 

Club Events 

ASOC Awareness Program 

Youth Red Cross Club of Kumaraguru Institutions conducted a workshop in collaboration with HAM Club of Kumaraguru to create an awareness regarding the ASOC (Amateur Station Operator’s Certificate) examination. This workshop was organized on 28 April 2022. The registration form was circulated through various social media platforms, student groups, peers, and via e-mails. The main objective of the event was to spread awareness about ASOC examination, the syllabus to be covered, strategies to score marks, and the procedures to get HAM license. The guest Mr. Karthikeyan, Assistant Professor, Department of ECE, KCT, & HAM Club in-charge covered the topics of what HAM radio is, why should we opt for it, how it works and how to become a HAM operator, when it is used, and where it is used. He also mentioned that unlike other communication networks, HAM radio can be used for establishing communication during disaster without any infrastructure like radio towers. By qualifying Amateur Station Operator Certification Exam (ASOC) and getting a license from the Ministry of Communication (WPC), one can become a HAM operator. Finally, he gave a demonstration on how to use a handy (Walkie-Talkie) by tuning at a particular frequency. There were 30+ participants for the event.
