Department Events
One Week Online Faculty Development Programme on English Language Teaching and Research

The Department of Languages and Communication organised a One Week Online Faculty Development Programme on English Language Teaching and Research from 17 to 23 May 2021. The One Week FDP had 137 participants from 21 Indian states in addition to 3 international participants. The thrust areas of the FDP included Curriculum Design, Material Planning and Production, Pedagogy, Testing and Assessment, Digital Tools in Language Teaching, Integrating Language teaching practice and research and Applying for Grants and Funds in the ELT domain.
On 17 May, the one-week FDP was inaugurated in the presence of Prof Paul Gunashekar, Former Proctor & Dean of English Language Education who is also the only Indian who is adviser and Indian English consultant to the Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary and The Oxford English Dictionary. During the inauguration, Dr. Arokia Lawrence Vijay, Head, Department of Languages and Communication welcomed the gathering. Principal, Dr. D.Saravanan, and Dr. Ezhilarasi M, Head, SFS offered their felicitations.
On the Day 1, Prof Paul Gunashekar delivered the inaugural lecture on “Curricular Issues in Course Design”. On the second day of the FDP, Dr. Sheba Victor, Assistant Professor, EFLU, Hyderabad delivered an interactive session on “Material Development for Engineering Programmes”. On 19th May, Dr. Vijaya, Assistant Professor, EFLU, Lucknow Campus handled an engaging a session on “Integrating Classroom Teaching Practice and Research”. On 20 May, Prof Lina Mukhopadhyay, an exponent in Assessments delivered an informative session on “Learning about Classroom Based Language Assessment”. On 21 May, Dr. Kshema Jose, Assistant Professor, EFLU, Hyderabad conducted an interactive session on “Digital Tools for Teaching and Assessment”. On Day 6 of the FDP, Dr. Madhavi Gayathri Raman, Assistant Professor, EFLU, Hyderabad delivered an engaging session on integrating “Syllabus and Materials for Professional Programmes”. On the final day of the FDP, Dr. Vijaya, Assistant Professor, EFLU, Lucknow Campus delivered a session on “Applying for Research funds in English Language and Literature”.
The One Week FDP recorded more than 95% of attendance and following everyday sessions, assessment and feedback form was submitted by the participants. The FDP was convened by Dr. Abirami V, Assistant Professor of English, Department of Languages and Communication. The Co-convenors include Dr. Srikala J, Assistant Professor II, Dr. Tissaa Tony C, Assistant Professor II, Dr. Hema, Assistant Professor I, and Dr. Mythili A.S., Assistant Professor I. The FDP was well received, and the participants shared positive and encouraging feedback with the organising team.
International Research Workshop on Role of Disruptive Technologies in Business Transformation
An International Research Workshop on Role of Disruptive Technologies in Business Transformation was organised by KCT Business School in association with Infinite Sum Modelling LLC, Seattle, USA, on 21 and 22 May 2021 via MS Teams. Dr.Badri Narayanan Gopalakrishnan, Affiliate Faculty Member, University of Washington, School of Environmental Sciences and Forestry & Co-Founder, Infinite Sum Modelling LLC, and Ms.Sumathi Chakravarthy, Partner and Director, Infinite Sum Modelling LLC, along with other experts from the company handled the sessions. The workshop helped the participants in understanding the importance of Industry 4.0 technologies in business transformation, applying analytical tools in business decision making, and examining the cross-functional approaches that shape the global business landscape. There were 50+ participants for the event.
International Webinar Series on Advancement in Geotechnical Engineering

The Department of Civil Engineering, KCT, in association with Indian Geotechnical Society, Coimbatore, conducted an International Webinar Series on Advancement in Geotechnical Engineering from 24 to 30 May 2021 via MS Teams. The prominent speakers included Dr.Narendra Samadiya, Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee; Dr.G. V. Rao, Former Professor, IIT Delhi; Dr.Amit Prashant, Professor, IIT Gandhi Nagar, Gujarat; Dr.Manoj Datta, Professor, IIT Delhi; Prof.Krishna R. Reddy, University of Illinois, Chicago, USA; Dr.P. V. Sivapullaiah, Former Professor, IISc, Banglore; Dr.Kishan D, Associate Professor, MANIT, Bhopal; and Er.Ravi Sundaram, Director, Cengrs Geotechnica Pvt. Ltd., NCR Delhi. Various topics like natural fibre geotextiles, pozzolanic stabilisation of soils using lime and industrial solid waste, Raft & Pile vs Piled-Raft foundation, Ground Penetrating Radar, mining of large old MSW landfills, identifying defects in large diameter piles, and geo-environmental engineering for sustainable development were discussed during the webinar session.
Workshop on Asset Liability Management in Banks & Reading and Interpreting Bank Balance Sheet
A Workshop on Asset Liability Management in Banks & Reading and Interpreting Bank Balance Sheet was conducted by KCT Business School on 20 May 2021 via MS Teams. Mr.Lakshmanan S, Former Banker, Trainer – Banking Courses, explained the concepts of asset and liability, capital, risk weighed assets, financial statement, profit and loss account, balance sheet, banking, capital adequacy ratio, CRR, SLR, SBI Reserves, Canara Reserves, and borrowings. There were around 70 participants for the event and the workshop provided a wider view of balance sheet in banks and the financial function of bank basics.
Global Talk Series on Legal Aspects of Internet Marketing – Global Perspectives
KCT Business School conducted an online event titled Global Talk Series on Legal Aspects of Internet Marketing – Global Perspectives on 26 May 2021. The interactive session was delivered by Ms.Suganthi Nadar, CEO, Tamil Unlimited. The guest speaker opened the session by explaining the eco system of the legal framework around the globe. She also explained internet marketing, advertisement, and content providers. The speaker cited a real-time example by quoting the strategies followed by one of the biggest retail stores that paved way to legal set up of data privacy. She listed that the legal issues could arise in Human Interaction, Human Right, Criminal Activity, Data Usage, Bit coin Regulations and AI Regulations. She also deliberated on major e-commerce companies like Google, Amazon, Facebook, Twitter, Flipkart, Alibaba and explained the current landscape of the laws available in US, India and Europe. She advised that marketers should be aware of the terminologies – copyright, trademark, patent, privacy, misinformation, hoax, spam, junk, cybersecurity, and sovereignty.
Webinar on Personal Branding and Digital Portfolio
IEEE KCT Student Branch organised a webinar on Personal Branding and Digital Portfolio on 27 May 2021. Mr.Ramneek Kalra, IEEE Impact Creator & Project Engineer, Wipro Limited India, came up with the ways to market oneself in an interview. He also deliberated on how to prepare an effective resume, tips on how to express our opinion in an interview, tips on improving the skills for showcasing the abilities and qualifications, and how to create and improve digital portfolio.
Guest Lecture on Family Business Management

KCT Business School conducted a guest lecture on Family Business Management – Concerns and Issues to take it to the Next Level on 28 May 2021 via MS Teams. Mrs. Alagu Swetha Saranya, Proprietor, HOMEFABZ, dealt with the problems faced while taking up a family business and deliberated on how to take it to the next level. The speaker discussed about how an upcoming entrepreneur must approach the start-up or takeover of a business. The insights and the confidence which an entrepreneur must have was shared to the participants during the session, and also the speaker shared her experience that she had in her life about the process of managing her business successfully through these years. The main outcome of this lecture was that the participants were provided with a real-time experience of the guest speaker which provided inputs about what an entrepreneur must have to achieve success in their business. There were 75+ participants for the event.

A Guest Talk on Bonds and Equity Shares – Valuation Models was conducted by KCT Business School on 29 May 2021 via MS Teams. Dr.Senthil Kumar A, Assistant Professor, Amrita School of Business, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Coimbatore, explained the concepts to the participants. This served to be an informative session.
Webinar on Core Placement Opportunities
A webinar on Core Placement Opportunities and Skill to be Upgraded was conducted by the Department of Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering, KCT, jointly with TVS Training Services on 22 May 2021. Mr.Naveenan L J A, Head – Training and Projects and Mr.Thangaraj A, Trainer, Training and Projects, TVS Training & Services Ltd., shared the concepts of low-cost automation, industrial automation and executive skill upgradation. There were around 120 participants for the event.
Civil Alumni Tale – Metro Structures in India & its Construction Techniques

A lecture on Metro Structures in India & its Construction Techniques was conducted on 31 May 2021 via MS Team as a part of Civil Alumni Tale by the Department of Civil Engineering, KCT. Mr.Santharamukumar S, Associate Project Consultant – Bridges & Metro Structures, L&T Infrastructure Engineering Limited, shared his vast experience in the field of planning and designing metro structures and bridges.

A webinar on Being Creative was conducted by the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, KCT, on 30 May 2021. Ms.Deniela Grene, Associate – Business Development, Zycus, Bengaluru, described about the concepts of design thinking, critical thinking and innovative designs.
Webinar on Resume Building and Tips for Cracking Interview
The Department of Automobile Engineering, KCT, conducted a webinar on Resume Building and Tips for Cracking Interview on 28 May 2021 via MS Teams. Mr.Kowshigan S V, Design Engineer, Titan Engineering and Automation Limited, Hosur, and Mr.Raja S, Design Engineer, Hirotec India, Coimbatore, described the various strategies that may be implemented to draft an effective resume. The session also covered the methodologies that are essential to face interviews with confidence. Mr. Raja presented on the tips for cracking an interview. He insisted on the significance of various skills and highlighted various processes involved in interview shortlisting, aptitude and technical questions and answers, group discussion, technical interview and HR interview. He also covered about the importance of building a LinkedIn profile.
Special Lecture on Aerodynamic Principles of Helicopter

A Special Lecture on Aerodynamic Principles of Helicopter was organised by the Department of Aeronautical Engineering, KCT, on 28 May 2021. The principles of aerodynamics were clearly explained during the session by Dr.Ranjith Mohan, Department of Aerospace Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT Madras), Chennai. This helped the participants to understand the principles of helicopter aerodynamics and how it is different from fixed wing aircraft. There were 160+ participants for the event.

A Guest Lecture on Impact of Covid and Recovery of Economies – An Economist Perspective was conducted by KCT Business School on 31 May 2021. Dr.Badri Narayanan Gopalakrishnan, Affiliate Faculty Member, University of Washington, School of Environmental Sciences and Forestry & Co-Founder, Infinite Sum Modelling LLC, Seattle, USA, explained the impact of covid over the macro-economic indicators of the global economies.
Workshop on Scratch Software
An online workshop titled Scratch was conducted for school students on 29 May 2021 by the Department of Mathematics and the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, KCT, via Zoom. The event aimed to impart modern technological knowledge to school students. Programming concepts inclusive of conditional statements and loop statements were demonstrated to the participants using scratch software. The workshop was sponsored by IEEE-Women in Engineering. There were 90+ students actively participating in this event, which showcased their progamming skills, aptitude skills, and problem solving strategies.
Research Methodology Workshop on Cluster Analysis

A Research Methodology Workshop on Cluster Analysis was conducted on 02 June 2021 via MS Teams by KCT Business School. Dr.Murugappan E, Professor, Bannari Amman Institute of Technology, Erode, described the various strategies that can be applied while carrying out cluster analysis. This helped the students to understand how to perform a Cluster Analysis and gain knowledge in applying and interpreting the output table. There were 160+ participants for the event. Conceptual understanding of cluster analysis, demonstration with case study and hands-on training in SPSS platform served to be the main outcomes of the workshop.
Webinar on Electric Vehicles & The Way Forward
A webinar was conducted by the Department of Automobile Engineering, KCT, in association with SAE India on 19 May 2021. This webinar on Electric Vehicles & The Way Forward covered the key points regarding the opportunities for players across the EV value chain and some critical aspects that will enable the development of EV ecosystem in India. Mr.Venkatesalu M, served to be the guest speaker of the day.
Guest Lecture on Taxation in Mutual Fund Investments
An online Guest Lecture on Taxation in Mutual Fund Investments was organised by KCT Business School on 25 May 2021. Mr.Gowtham Dhamotharasamy, Founder, Fincliniq and Authorised Partner, Zerodha, explained the taxation concepts that are involved in mutual fund investments. The session helped the participants to understand the applicability of taxes in mutual fund investments and to assess the reporting requirements to be followed while investing in mutual funds.

A Guest Lecture on Recent Developments in Printing was organised by the Department of Textile Technology, KCT, on 29 May 2021 via MS Teams. Mr.Pravin Amuthan, Senior Merchandiser, BASK Fashion India (P) Ltd., Coimbatore, detailed about the procedures followed in textile printing in the industry. There were 70+ participants for the session and the webinar contents and speech were well received by the participants. Overall, the webinar session gave an idea about recent developments in printing, especially in digital printing, flock printing, and automatic table printing.

A Guest Talk on Branding for Industrial Products was conducted on 03 June 2021 via MS Teams by KCT Business School. Mr.Aneesh Kumar C, Manager-Marketing, ATS ELGI Limited, delivered a lecture on how to promote industrial brands. This helped the participants to understand the branding strategies that are in practice for promoting industrial products.

An Alumni Talk on Career Progress and Life Travel after KCT was conducted on 21 May and 05 June 2021 by the Department of Textile Technology. Mr.Ajit V, Faithful Furnishing Fabrics – Textiles and VAAS Ventures: Food Processing, Karur, delivered a speech titled Masters at Manchester & Life after KCT. Mr.Mohanraj P, PGS Spinning Mills, Coimbatore, delivered a speech on Life as Entrepreneur.
Technical E-Poster Presentation
Technical E-Poster Presentation was conducted by the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, KCT, on 28 May 2021. The participants were asked to present digital posters on the topic empowering innovation through embedded systems and IOT. The participants came with innovative ideas and presented their posters. The jury members of the session included Dr.S.N.Shivappriya, Associate Professor, Dr.S.Sasikala, Associate Professor and Ms.R.Dhivya Praba, Assistant Professor-II, ECE Department, KCT. There were 30 participants and 13 teams for the event, who presented their e-posters and the jury members came up with a few questions about the topics, which would enable them to build their project to the next level. The best poster was awarded with Best E-Poster Award certificate.

KCT Business School conducted a Guest Lecture on Start Up Business Fundamentals on 21 May 2021. Mr.Husain Ahmed, Managing Director, Cheran Academy, deliberated the session. The event provided opportunity to the participants to understand how to build a business and entrepreneurship. There were 180+ participants for the event and they found the session to be informative.

The Department of Mechatronics Engineering, KCT, organised a technical webinar on Latest Emerging Technologies in Automotive Applications: Advancement in IC Engines, Alternate Fuels and EV Technology, on 26 May 2021 via Google Meet. Mr.Sivakumar Gopalakrishnan, Manager – Diesel Powertrains, FEV India Private Limited, Chennai, clearly explained about the latest emerging technologies in the field of automobile engineering.

The Department of Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering, KCT, in association with International Society of Automation, Bangalore Section, organised an Interactive Session with Successful Start-Up Founders on 24 May 2021. Mr.Jasir Sabri, Founder & Managing Director, CONSYST, Cochin, interacted with the participants and answered their queries related to the problems in start-up businesses.

KCT Business School conducted an online guest lecture on Consumer Protection Law on 29 May 2021. Ms.Nithya Varshini, Advocate, Avinashi Bar Council, Tiruppur, elaborated about the different laws that exist to protect the consumer rights.

An online session on How to Become an Entrepreneur and Entrepreneurship for Career Guidance was organized by the Department of Computer Applications, KCT, on 30 May 2021. Ms.Miduna Varshini V, MBA in Entrepreneurship, gave the lecture on how to become an entrepreneur. She has been a part of the family business, which is inclusive of a textile unit and a super market. The session helped the participants to understand the nuances of running a business successfully.
Aatral – Explore Beyond Your Limits

The Department Association of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, KCT, conducted their valedictory function titled Aatral – Explore Beyond Your Limits on 31 May 2021. This served as the platform to recognise the talents of the department by appreciating their achievements with awards. The students and the faculty members who excelled in various fields received their awards. There were around 250 participants for the event.
Guest Lecture on Design Thinking – Innovations
A Guest Lecture on Design Thinking – Innovations was conducted by KCT Business School on 05 June 2021 via MS Teams. Mr.Arjun Ramakrishnan, Innovation Manager, Oman & Former Associate Design, Squiggles, delivered the lecture on the significance of innovative ideas in the present scenario. The session also gave insights on how to transform an idea into a business model. Customer journey mapping was discussed, and suitable guidelines were given. The main outcome of this lecture was that it gave a detailed design thinking process that is essential for a successful business. It also gave techniques on prioritizing ideas, navigating between stages of design thinking and understanding the customer.
Junior Skills Championship 2021
The Department of Mechanical Engineering, KCT, organised an outreach programme on Junior Skills Championship 2021 for CBSE school students on 23 May 2021. Dr.Prakash E, Skill Expert in World Skill 2019 Selection, Associate Professor, Department of Automobile Engineering, Bannari Amman Institute of Technology, Erode, and Mr.Naveen Sankar A, Bronze Medallist – India Skills 2018, Assistant Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Bannari Amman Institute of Technology, Erode, served to be the chief guests.
Code Friday
An online event titled Code Friday was conducted by the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, KCT, on 21 May 2021. A total of four questions were given to the participants and they were asked to solve any three real-world problems. The participants were asked to solve these questions within an hour and after a close competition, Subbu Lakshmi Shruti and Dhanush Kumar of I year, CSE, managed to secure the first and second places respectively. The outcome of the event was to introduce the first-year students to the world of problem solving and bring awareness about the importance of solving real-life problems. There were 40+ participants for the event.
Webinar on Construction of Special Structures – Harbour & Bridges
A webinar on Construction of Special Structures – Harbour & Bridges was organised by the Department of Civil Engineering, KCT, on 20 May 2021. Mr.Cyril Santhosh J, Assistant Professor, Coimbatore Institute of Technology, Coimbatore, came up with the techniques that are being used in Highway Planning and Designing, Pavement Design and Maintenance, using Remote Sensing and GIS. The event also focused on the construction techniques of special structures like harbour and bridges. There were 120+ participants for the webinar session.
Workshop on Design Thinking
An online workshop on Design Thinking was conducted by KCT Business School from 01 to 04 June 2021. Dr.Lakshmi Meera, AVP, Forge, Coimbatore, provided a hands-on training to the participants on design thinking. The resource person shared the fundamentals in design thinking that starts with empathy and went on to build the theme of convergent and divergent thinking process in Design Thinking. The participants were provided with themes to create design thinking solution criteria. This provided them the opportunity to have a hands-on experience. The main outcome of this lecture was that the speaker of the day shared her real-time experience with everyone, which indicated that an entrepreneur must have design thinking capabilities.
Club Events
Super60 – Week 10 & 11
Week 10 of Super60 turned out to be an interesting experience indeed. Addressing emotions through meditation, tasting the essence of gratitude, understanding more about the thinking process and solving problems was all about this week’s journey. There were two sessions on meditation dealing with the kinesthetics and addressing emotions. Gratitude and Feedback session helped the batch to learn how gratitude helps to maintain positive emotions and to build good relationships. Six Thinking Hats served to be a problem-solving session and it gave exposure on various strategies that can help to solve problems. Week 11 taught the Art of Unlearning and was filled with alumni discussions and project discussions. The Art of Unlearning made the members to think logically by asking logical questions for every problem that they face in their daily life. Mr.Pranesh and Mr.Subramani, Alumnus – KCT, shared their experience of outbound training and their experience in working with various clubs and forums at KCT. They also discussed about the projects that they have undertaken, and it provided the best platform for the team members to gain a lot of technical and strategical information.
