Yes! A shift from conventional classroom and traditional education has happened. A new era of learning, new learning platform and new educational plan have shattered the sceptic ideologies about online education. When classroom teaching becomes the alternative option, KOED (Kumaraguru Online Education) has brought in a new educational experience at KCT. It has introduced excellently built in teaching-learning structure that has the capability to sharpen technical skills in a supreme way. Meticulous preparation for asynchronous and synchronous sessions is in progress to create an educative as well as an experiential learning. Amidst all the adaptation to new level of technology and teaching, faculty members of S&H are involved in different career enhancement activities that cater to the development of the department and the institution. The wide-ranging activities include organising and participating in Webinars, FDPs, STTPs, Workshops of National and International interest, Research and Project proposal submissions, Research article reviews, Book Chapter and Paper Publications, External academic contributions like resource person and guest speaker. In view of the same, the first issue of S&H Newsletter (2020-2021) highlights the key contributions of the faculty members during the month of June, July and August 2020.

Mathematics Division
Webinar on Accelerating Learning and Research using SIMULINK & MATLAB

The webinar organised by Department of S&H (Mathematics) on Accelerating Learning and Research using SIMULINK & MATLAB on 26th June 2020 was designed in a manner to benefit all UG level students from different branches of Engineering and people from various sectors. 720 people actively participated in the event to gear up their thirst for learning techniques using MATLAB. The session was presented by Mr.D.Rajkumar, Technical Support Engineer-MathWorks, Design Tech System Pvt Ltd. The presenter covered content related to basic workings and techniques using MATLAB. Using the online MATLAB, onramp, all the participants were given hands on training to solve various application-oriented tasks and on successful completion of the tasks, E-certificate was provided from MathWorks. Queries and questions were taken at the end of the session. The entire session was very interactive and turned out to be a wholesome learning experience where participants gained knowledge and benefitted upon spending their time. Online Seven Day International Faculty Development Programme on Mathematical Modelling for Data Analytics and Engineering

Department of Mathematics (S&H) had taken pleasure in organizing an Online Seven Day International Faculty Development Programme from 29th June 2020 to 5th July 2020 on the topic Mathematical Modelling for Data Analytics and Engineering. An overwhelming response was received from across the globe for this Faculty Development Programme. Participants from various countries like Nigeria, Dubai, Poland, Germany, England, Malaysia and 55% participants from North India had taken part in this programme. An average of 2198 registrants participated in this mega FDP. The programme had received an awesome feedback and all the participants thoroughly enjoyed this International Faculty Development Programme and congratulated the Institution and the organizer for giving such a platform where the participants could enrich their knowledge during this quarantine period. Topics for the FDP were based on GPU Computing – Industrial Case Study, Mathematical Modelling with Applications – A system’s approach, Mathematical Modelling for COVID -19, Deep Learning using Autoencoders, Mathematical Modelling of Infectious Diseases, A Continuous Tug of War between Modelers & Decision Makers: Lessons learned or unlearned, Consequences of COVID-19 uncertain times, Dynamics of Dengue and COVID-19 in India. The session holders of this Seven Day Faculty Development Programme were Eminent Professors from Arizona State University – USA, Ohio State University – USA, ISI Kolkata, IIT Madras, IIT Patna, NIT Goa and VIT Chennai.  Dr. Sundar. Webinar on Application of Mathematics in Wavelet Packet Transform for Image Representation

Department of S&H (Mathematics) organised a One-Day Webinar on Application of Mathematics in Wavelet Packet Transform for Image Representation on 25th July 2020. The resource person for the webinar was Dr. T. Palaniswamy, Associate Professor, Department of Mathematics, Amrita School of Engineering, Coimbatore. Research knowledge about the origin of Image Processing and how Wavelets form the foundation for representing Images, Wavelet Decomposition, 1D and 2D Wavelet Packets were the topics presented during the webinar.  This webinar had provided a wonderful platform for the research scholars, faculty members in acquiring knowledge on Wavelet Packet Transform and its application in Image Processing. Dr. N. Kalpana, Assistant Professor III and Dr. A. Ezhilarasi, Assistant Professor (SRG), Mathematics were the co-ordinators of this event. 190 participants actively participated in this webinar.

Five Day STTP on Modern Mathematical Tools for Calculus and Analytics

Department of Mathematics (S&H) had organized a Short-Term Training Programme (STTP) on Modern Mathematical Tools for Calculus and Analytics from 10th August 2020 to 14th August 2020. The event had an overwhelming response Nationally and Internationally. Around 1012 participants actively took part in this STTP. The topics covered during this STTP were MATLAB and its optimization techniques, Introduction to SageMath and Plotting 2D and 3D, Calculus and Differential Equation Problems in SageMath, Visualising Mathematics through GeoGebra and Mathematical Analysis using Tableau. The Guest Speakers for each day were Dr.C.Vijayalakshmi, Associate Professor, Central University of Tamilnadu, Dr. Dhanashekar, Assistant Professor, Vellore Institute of Technology, Chennai, Dr. Manivannan, Assistant Professor, Vellore Institute of Technology, Dr. Parthiban, Assistant Professor, Vellore Institute of Technology, Chennai, Dr.Sherin Zafar from Jamia Hamadard Deemed University, New Delhi. The event was coordinated by Dr.Maheswari. K, Assistant Professor and Head (i/c) and Dr.Anitha.N, Assistant Professor, Mathematics.

National Webinar on Application of Differential Equations in Civil Engineering

The Department of S&H (Mathematics) organised a National Webinar on Application of Differential Equations in Civil Engineering on 11th August 2020. The resource person for the National webinar was Dr. M.P.Muthuraj, Assistant Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, Coimbatore Institute of Technology, Coimbatore. During this webinar, the speaker shared his insights on several constructional projects and their relation to mathematical background. His research knowledge about mathematical applications in real time civil engineering projects were shared during his presentation. This webinar had provided a wonderful platform for the research scholars, faculty members in attaining knowledge on the real time application of differential equations in civil engineering. Dr. K.Meena, Assistant Professor (SRG) and Dr.J.Dhivya, Assistant Professor, Mathematics were the co-ordinators of this event. 330 participants actively participated in this webinar.

Hopscotch – Exclusive Quiz Competition

The event Hopscotch is an exclusive quiz competition conducted by the Department of S&H (Mathematics) on 15th and 16th August 2020 aimed to uplift the thoughts and minds of students who desired to use this unparalleled calmness for skill development. Around 328 students from various departments and colleges participated in this event. Clues for the concepts like connexions and crossword puzzles were coined in relation to the current situation and core subjects. Two examples were posted 15 minutes prior to the event to brainstorm the participants, as it added an essence to gear up the participants to face a fun filled technical event. Top three participants were announced winners and e-certificates were provided to those with fair grades. The entire event was intended to boost the restless minds, build their capability, and achieve the final objective.

Physics Division
Online Faculty Development Programme on Evolution of Functional Materials and its effective characterization towards diverse Engineering Applications

Department of S&H (Physics) conducted a seven-day FDP on Evolution of Functional Materials and its effective characterization towards diverse Engineering Applications from 22nd June 2020 to 29th June 2020. Around 240 applicants were selected based on their research area and statement of purpose. Online session was conducted using Google Meet. About 14 speakers from reputed institutions and prestigious industries like IIT Bombay, IIIT DM, Anna University, CSIR-CECRI, NIT AP, VIT, PSG and CIT were invited. The concepts of Photovoltaics, 2-D materials for Super capacitors for energy storage, Nanomaterials for Li ion batteries and its various functionalities, Photoluminescence spectroscopy analysis using FL6500 and FL8500, DSSC – Third generation solar cells, Simultaneous Thermal Analyzer applications in measuring thermal isokinetic and equilibrium studies were discussed during the Programme. Other topics included in the programme were shape memory alloys for various Sensor and Actuator applications, Nano ceramics for biomedical application such as bio implants and its characterization, Metal Nano particles and composites for optical, bio and gas Sensors, Nanostructured materials for thermoelectric production and storage using wearable electronics, Surface characterization using FESEM for various morphological studies of nanostructured materials, Nanomaterials for Bio imaging and MRI imaging applications, Physics and applications of Heusler alloys for Magneto caloric and GMR related applications, Nano magnetic materials for Random memory switching using thin film transport properties, Nanomaterials for Photocatalytic as well as Solar cells for dye degradation. It is observed that the sessions were highly educative for the participants as the programme highlighted various functions of conditions optimizing experimental methodologies. Study and discussion about analytical results was the highly appreciated part of the event. The organizers of this FDP were Dr. K. Rathina, Assistant Professor II, Mrs. M. Two-day online workshop on X-Ray Diffraction and its applications

Department of S&H (Physics) organized a two-day online workshop on X-Ray diffraction and its applications in association with the Malvern Panalytical, United Kingdom on 6th and 7th August 2020. The inauguration session began with an introductory note about the workshop presented by Dr. H. Arul, Assistant Professor and Head (i/c), Physics Division. This was followed by Mr. Bertand Floure, Sr. Sector Manager, Malvern Panalytical, Singapore who discussed about the variety of instruments available in the XRD analysis. The speaker of the next session was Dr.Sandeep Nagar, Application Specialist, Malvern Panalytical, India who presented a basic view on Crystallography and various orientations in the measurement. The afternoon presentation was a demonstration session on Highpres Xpert tool for qualitative phase quantification using RAW data from the instrument. The final session was shared by Ms. Melissa Ho, Sr. Sales Manager Malvern Panalytical, Singapore about the Xpert Pro machining, and detection process using various scintillating mechanisms. The second day began with the lecture by Dr. Shibu M. Eapen, Scientist, Sophisticated Testing and Instrumentation Centre, Cochin, India about the Sample preparation and its various insights with respect to Phase quantification analysis of various sample textures. The next session was a demo on High Score plus for various field effect analysis using diffraction pattern. It was really a good hands-on session. The afternoon session was presented by Dr. K. Saravana Kumar, Assistant Professor of Physics, Sri. S. Ramasamy Naidu Memorial College, Virudhunagar, Tamil Nadu about the Rietveld analysis using MAUD software. Vote of thanks and report summary was presented by Dr. R. Sengodan, Assistant Professor (SRG), Physics.

Webinar on Recent trends in Thin Film Technology

An online Webinar on Recent trends in Thin Film Technology was organised on 30th July 2020 by the Department of S&H (Physics). Dr.R.Balamurugan, Assistant Professor, Physics presented the welcome address and Dr.H.Arul, Assistant Professor and Head i/c, Physics delivered  presidential address to the participants. Dr. Sathish Sugumaran, Department of Physics, Central University of Tamil Nadu, Thiruvarur, was the guest speaker of the event who spoke on Thin Film Technology and Nanotechnology. Dr.S.Sugumaran elaborated on the pivotal role of Thin Film Technology and its applications in various fields in contemporary scenario with video illustrations and wonderful display of  photographs of a fabricated device. Dr.S.Inbakumar, Assistant Professor II proposed the vote of thanks. The event was well-received among the participants.

Webinar on Lasers Basics and Material Processing Applications

The webinar entitled Lasers Basics and Material Processing Applications was organised by Department of S&H (Chemistry) on 21st July 2020. The webinar was chaired by Dr. P. Ramamurthy FNASc, Department of Chemistry, IIT Madras, Chennai. The webinar provided highly informative insights about the basic concepts of lasers and application of lasers for material processing. Undergraduate & Postgraduate students, M.Phil. & Ph.D. Scholars and Faculty members of Science, Engineering and Technology were the beneficiaries of the webinar. Most of the participants acclaimed that the session was educative and informative. The event was organised by Dr. K. Sampath, Assistant Professor and Dr. R. Ashokkumar, Assistant Professor, Chemistry and supported by Dr. K.R. Aranganayagam, Assistant Professor, Head (i/c), Chemistry and hosted by Dr. R. Hema, Assistant Professor, English.

One-day webinar on Initiatives and Interim Guidance on Post-Covid19 Awareness

Department of S & H (Chemistry) organized a One-day webinar on Initiatives and Interim Guidance on Post-Covid19 Awareness on 2nd June 2020. The webinar focussed on creating awareness among the teaching community about Post-Covid preparedness, blended community Health and Education.  Dr.A. Saravanakumar, Senior Medical Physicist, PSG Institute of Medical Science, Research & Hospitals, Coimbatore delivered a speech on Initiatives and Interim guidance on Post-covid19. Faculty from various Engineering and Arts & Science Colleges participated in the webinar and gained knowledge on PCR tests, N95 masks, Screening & Imaging techniques with WHO posters. The event was organised by Dr. R. Mahalakshmi, Assistant Professor II and  Dr. D. Jalajaa, Assistant Professor, Chemistry.

English Division
A Three-day Webinar Series on Literary Theory and Practice

Department of S & H (English) organised a webinar titled A Three-Day Webinar Series on Literary Theory and Practice from 31st August to 2nd September 2020 via Zoom platform.  The webinar concentrated on discussing the various aspects of literary theory and its applications.  First day of the webinar started with the session titled Postmodernism – its Theory and Praxis. Dr.U.Sumathy, Associate Professor and Head, PG and Research Department of English, Government Arts College (Autonomous), Coimbatore, presented an overview on the various aspects of  Postmodernism, its theories and its applications. In addition, specific examples for each concept and its application in literature were also illustrated. The entire view of the session was exemplified when a text was analysed from postmodernism perspective which served as an eye-opener for all the participants. Second day of the webinar series continued with the session titled Ecocriticism to Ecological Activism deliberated by Dr.S.G.Mohanraj, Assistant Professor of English, Department of Science and Humanities, Kumaraguru College of Technology, Coimbatore.  Role of ecocriticism in literature, emergence of ecocritical concepts, various themes and problems analysed in ecocriticism formed a part of the presentation.  The problems dealt in ecocriticism were related with the current real-life situations during the presentation.  The session titled Cultural Studies and its Theoretical Importance was presented on the third day of the webinar series.  Dr.N.Nila, Assistant Professor, Department of English, Mercy College, Palakkad, Kerala, explicated the concepts of cultural studies and its relativeness with our present life.  She also vividly described how each culture is unique with its tradition and behaviour, and how the habits of people vary from one culture to another.  She also illustrated these theoretical aspects with suitable examples.  There were more than 350 participants for this academic programme from all over India, Andamans and Nepal.
