Engineering- one of the stunning disciplines that makes this modern world and people living in this century live a happy life without interdependence whatsoever. Many people curse that people who study engineering are useless and that it’s a waste of their entire life. But awe-strikingly, “Engineering” is the reason for all the magic that exists in the world. It is the moral life of intellectual things.
It is a wonder that a typical search in the Google can produce 7g of Carbon-di-oxide. Are you wondering how? I hope this article written by me will describe you how.
Today, search engines enable us to access much useful information in an instance, without having to leave home. Tools like email, online books, photos, and video chat increase productivity while decreasing our reliance on car trips, pulp and paper.
It is actually that if you look in for two searches in the Giant website Google it is capable of producing CO2 which is same as the carbon dioxide that boiling kettle produces. Boiling a kettle produces about 15g of CO2.
But what will be the reason behind this??
Computers have become a bigger part of more people’s lives; information technology consumes an increasing amount of energy, and Google takes this impact seriously. For instance, if an average adult requires around 8000 kJ of energy from food in a day, a single Google search uses the same amount of energy that your body burns in ten seconds.
This emission is due to electricity. We can also specifically mean the electricity required to power a computer and the amount that requires sending the request to servers around the world. This discovery aims in increasing warnings for the environmental impact of computer and internet use. And an IT engineer named Gartner has said that usage of computers now causes about two per cent of global CO2 emissions and its carbon footprint exceeded for the first time in 2007. So in order to reduce this risk, Google has come up with such a brilliant idea.
It has been said that browsing a basic website like opening of mail generates about 0.02g of CO2 for every second it is viewed.Websites with complex videos can be responsible for increase in up to 0.2 g of CO2 per second. These servers, clients and networks all require electricity and that electricity is largely generated by burning fossil fuels like coal, oil and gas.
Google’s unique structure wherein they send searches to multiple servers causes its searches to produce more emissions than some other sites. Google operates huge data centres around the world that consume a great deal of power. So the Google search engine has a definite environmental impact. Google is very efficient but their concern is to make searches fast and it means that they have a lot of extra capacity to burn energy. A British environmental website established that the CO2 emissions of a Google search are between 1g and 10g.
Suppose, if the user spends 15 minutes on their computer, the carbon emission given out by Google will be between 7g and 10g.However, one of the spokesmen in Google has insisted that “Google is one among the most efficient of all internet search providers.”
The comparison among the different servers would make Google a global network of servers forming a communication hub through which every internet user in the developed world passes on their way to their destination. Google’s green policy emphasizes both in terms of actual CO2 emissions and also in terms of its role as a global leader in its field. Every day approximately 242 million queries are processed in over 24 hours.
Wisner-Gross, an environmental fellow at Harvard is undergoing a research focus on this important issue and trying to work out the carbon footprint of websites. Wisner-Gross is planning to make other website bosses and users aware of this net’s environmental impact.
How can we view the level of CO2 emission?
The Google awards the websites with a “trust mark”, upon which users can click to see the site’s carbon footprint in their own computer. An interesting fact is also that if any website above 50,000 users per month means that the carbon figures are dominated by individuals’ own computers.
In fact, the name Google was initially connected with this story. It had planned initially and put on more strident efforts to be greener than many of its competitors. They don’t need too much artificial cooling, and came up with more exotic strategy to develop a viable form of energy that is both sustainable and cheaper than coal. For example; we could say that the company had already initiated a project called RechargeIT that aimed in popularising the use of plug-in, in electric vehicles. Another startup is to reduce the carbon emissions worldwide.
It is special to have Wissner-Gross in this Google project who currently serves as a leader in the green arena.
A typical website like Google definitely has a room for at least 30 per cent increase in efficiency. As the internet becomes more pervasive, such issues will become more important. So automatically there will be a search for solution. Google offers it.
Wissner-Gross makes an appealing point here that if the websites load faster it means that they’re more efficient and cost their owners less money. This is why Google in a whole year, produces only the same amount of CO2 as doing a single load of washing.Google has invested $45 million in developing this process in a greater wide.
Google in collaboration with the members of the IT community has been working to improve efficiency on a broader scale. This non-profit consortium is committed in cutting the energy consumed by computers and thereby reducing global CO2 emissions by half in 2020. That’s a single kettle of boiling water that will turn into boiling a lot of kettles containing tea.
Let’s make this world free from CO2 emission and live a happier life!!!
